Why has golf become so popular these days? Its the opportunity to be outside, to get a good whole body workout, network with friends or business colleagues at a leisurely pace, and to play a game that you can never play perfectly.

Your achievements are tallied on your scorecard for all time and the desire to improve your game can encourage you to play again and again.

Here is a very basic lesson in golf for the person who hasn't a clue about the game.

Golf is played on an eighteen-hole course. Each hole has its own "par" (value), which is the combined number of tee shots (drives), fairway shots, chips (short hits as you approach the green), and putts (on the green) you should need to take.

The par number is based on the length and difficulty of the hole. Pars range from 3 to 6. If you get the ball in the hole in five shots on a par five hole, you "made par." If it took you six shots, its called a bogie, if you made it in four, its a birdie.

There are usually "hazards" of some sort or other on all the holes. Bodies of water, sand traps, and trees are strategically placed to make reaching the hole more challenging. Beginner golfers should seek to find courses to play that are easier to play with fewer hazards.

Players keep their own score of the total number of shots taken for each hole. After the eighteenth hole, they add up their scores and the one with the lowest is the winner.

It is vital that beginners to golfing should not take the game too seriously, because it takes a very long time to play golf proficiently, even if the professionals on TV make it look so easy.

Take a lesson or two at the start of your golfing 'career', because it will help you develop a proper swing and help you get off to a good start.

A simple though important aspect of the game, which players of all experience can learn or remember to keep the course and the game enjoyable, is common courtesy. In the four years of playing golf on my high school team, I played many games against other schools. If the courses and the competition weren't difficult enough, things like balling into a divot, taking a shot in sand that wasn't raked, or putting through unfixed greens would certainly add up to work against you.

Weave all been to a course and have had it happen to us, when weave hit a good shot right down the middle of the fairway with our Nike golf club or our Cobra golf driver, and you're thinking that it can't get any better, but as you approach your ball, you see that its landed right in a big divot in the grass. You can't possibly hit a good shot now. Replacing divots is so easy to do, yet I think it is the least done of the many things players can do to keep the golf course in good condition. The last thing you want is for your ball to land in a divot, thereby messing up your next shot.

One thing to remember amongst other golf tips is that there are other players at the course. When I take a divot in the grass after a shot, I often think about if I would enjoy taking a shot from where I just swung. I know I'd be angry if my shot landed in a hole like that, so if the divot, which is probably a couple feet away, if not closer, is still pretty much intact, I just pick it up, and tap it back in with my foot. So easy to do, and yet not enough people do it.

Sand is another important aspect. After taking a shot out of the bunker, I make it a point to rake the sand. It's bad enough to hit a shot into the bunker; to find the sand all messed up just about takes the cake. Sand when not raked can even make the best golfers at sand shots falter. As usual, common courtesy goes a long way here. Though it's a bit of a pain to find the rake the sand again, have some sympathy for your fellow golfer who's had the misfortune of finding his/her ball in the bunker.

Garbage is as much of an irritant. I throw my trash, food wrappers and bottles in dustbins and never think twice about doing the same if I happen to come across trash on the course. This is truly something that can be followed by everyone. You'd agree that it's not the greatest feeling to have to take a shot on top of a plastic bag or with a soda can next to the ball.

Keeping the green in good shape is another one of my commandments. Avoid misshaping the greens by driving the golf cart on the greens and leaving track indentations. Be careful when you putt from the green in checking whether your ball made a dent on the green on landing. I use a putting tool or repair little dents with my putter. For even without dents and messed up tracks, putting can be tough enough.

I like to follow these things when out on the course; for I believe that it's important to be courteous to other players by keeping the course in good shape. Remember the Golden Rule iia treat others the way you want to be treated. Applying this philosophy to the links is a good way in maintaining golf as a gentleman's game.
