Wandering Catalina Island for the Day Takes You a World Away…

Santa Catalina Island is an incredibly rugged and stunningly beautiful island located just off the Southern California mainland. Home to some of the most abundant and diverse marine life in the world, the island is known as the birthplace of modern sport fishing, as well as a world class dive destination. 22 miles long and 8 miles wide, the island is the only one in the chain that has been developed, but most of the island is still uninhabited and pristine.

In such close proximity to Los Angeles and San Diego, Catalina Island is a favorite destination for weekend vacations, honeymoons, weddings and day trips. With so many ways to enjoy a visit to the island, vacationers come for many different reasons and take advantage of a bustling tourism industry.

Most of the islands inhabitants are centered in the town of Avalon, with 300 or more in the small port of Two Harbors. The rest are scattered around the island, but most of it still remains undeveloped and protected. Residents are a mixture of tour operators, hotel and restaurant staff, artisans, seafarers and retirees. Everything on the island is expensive as it all has to be imported by boat or barge. Due a restriction on cars and truck, local get around on quirky little modified golf cart, which adds to the islands charm.

Most of the island is managed by the Catalina Island Conservancy, which endeavors to restore the islands original flora and fauna. However, they are also charged with protecting one of the most interesting transplants to the island, a massive herd of wild Bison, which were brought in by a film production over 50 years ago.

Vacationers to the island can rent golf cart to explore the narrow streets, or rent bicycles. There are many different guided tours available as well which are great for those who want to learn about the islands rich history. A visit to the Catalina Casino, inland tour to see the buffalo, kayak your or scuba diving tour can make the trip a memorable one.

Accommodations are available for all budgets, as well as international cuisine, spa resorts, and yearly jazz and dance festivals. Whether you plan to stay a day or a few days, there are plenty of activities, places to eat, boutiques, and endless walks along the beach to keep visitors occupied. Santa Catalina Island is truly another world away from the rest of California, and a perfect, accessible getaway that is easy to plan and will satisfy your vacation wanderlust.
